Rabbi Moshe of Trani (Mabit) - The Sage of Safed Who Challenged the Beit Yosef for 40 Years
In Kiryat Sefer he determined, for each law in the Mishneh Torah, whether it comes from the Torah, from the thirteen rules by which the Torah is interpreted, from a law given to Moses at Sinai, or from the words and ordinances of the Sages. In Beit Elohim he explained the foundations of the faith in the gates of prayer, repentance and the principles, and the first commentary printed on Perek Shirah was attached to it.
A yeshiva head, judge and halakhic authority, one of the sages of Safed in the 16th century. Born in Salonica, he studied in Adrianople under his uncle Rabbi Aharon of Trani, went up to Safed, became the foremost disciple of Rabbi Yaakov Berab, and for more than fifty years sat in the city’s rabbinical court. He wrote Kiryat Sefer on the Rambam’s Mishneh Torah, Beit Elohim, and two volumes of responsa that were printed after his death.
The writings of Moshe ben Yosef di Trani can be read on Sefaria, a free library of Jewish texts. A title opens the text itself.

The archive doesn’t yet record an unbroken road from Rabbi Moshe of Trani to the chain of transmission: the trail reaches back to Mahari Berab and stops there.
