Core Concept

The Beit Shmuel was written to “redeem” the Even HaEzer part, which Torah scholars had neglected, and to turn it from “the stone the builders rejected” into “the chief cornerstone” and a centre of study. The second edition, in which the author himself added, removed and changed with his students, is the main one: the Shem HaGedolim rules that the first edition is not to be heeded.

Biography

Rabbi of Szydłów and Fürth, born in Poland in the mid-17th century, who studied at the yeshiva of Kraków. He is known for the Beit Shmuel, one of the “bearers of the vessels” on the Even HaEzer part of the Shulchan Arukh. He printed the first edition in Dyhernfurth, and after going over it in Fürth with his students he issued a corrected second edition, which has been printed since then in most editions of the Shulchan Arukh.
