Core Concept

Halakha that rests on scientific knowledge: in Meil Tzedakah he fixed the measure of the “gris” in the laws of stains; the book includes a drawing in actual size to measure by, and at its end a tract on geometry, gathered from Euclid, which he wrote in answer to a question put to him by the geometers of his generation. In Bnei Yonah, whose standing is that of a foundational halakhic work, he ruled that one need not refrain from reading Humashim printed by gentiles.

Biography

A rabbi and halakhic authority, one of the great rabbis of Bohemia, a native of Prague, who died young and still made a great impression on the world of halakha in his own lifetime. He was a Torah scribe by profession and acquired broad knowledge of the sciences. Three of his many books were printed after his death: the responsa Meil Tzedakah, after which he was called, Bnei Yonah on the laws of the Torah scroll and Kanfei Yonah on Yoreh De’ah.
