Biblical commentary

Podcast episode · Rabbi Chizkiyah ben Manoach (the Chizkuni)
His commentary is a purposeful anthology: after wandering through many lands in search of straightforward commentaries on the Torah, he took the best of twenty works, among them Rashi, the Rashbam and Ibn Ezra, and in general did not name his sources. He leans toward the realistic plain-sense method of Rabbi Yosef Bekhor Shor, and also brings from him passages of thought on the reasons for the commandments.
A French rabbi and biblical commentator of the 13th century, known by the name of his book, the Chizkuni, on the Five Books of the Torah. The exact details of his life are not known, and he is generally estimated to have been born in France around 1250 and to have died around 1310. His commentary was first printed in Venice in the Hebrew year 5284, within the Five Books of the Torah with Rashi, and in its preface he asks his readers to remember him and strengthen him.
The writings of Chizkiah ben Manoach (Chizkuni) can be read on Sefaria, a free library of Jewish texts. A title opens the text itself.
