Core Concept

His books tie the study of the Gemara to halakha: Ein Mishpat points from the place of the law in the Gemara to the words of the Rambam and the Semag, and later also to the Shulchan Arukh and the Four Turim, and it is an important aid to those who study the Gemara “according to the halakha”. Shiltei HaGiborim condenses the halakhic rulings that arise from the words of the Rif and from the way other Rishonim relate to them, and also holds a little of his own novellae.

Biography

One of the great later halakhic authorities (Acharonim), born in Italy to Rabbi Shimon of the Baruch family, a family of exiles from Spain. He wrote Mesorat HaShas, references to parallel passages in the Talmud which were printed in almost all its editions; Ein Mishpat Ner Mitzvah, references to the halakha in the words of the Rambam and the Semag; and Shiltei HaGiborim on the Rif, from which the Rema often brought rulings.
