Halakha and responsa
In Erech Lechem he glossed the Shulchan Arukh, and his glosses often agree with those of the Rema. The Sephardim throughout Egypt ruled according to him even where he disagreed with Maran, the Beit Yosef.
One of the renowned rabbis of Egyptian Jewry, born in Egypt around 1525, who served as rabbi of the Musta’arabim community in Cairo. He studied in Jerusalem under the Maharalbach, but his foremost teacher was the Radbaz, and in Egypt he was regarded as the greatest of his generation, “Mara DeAtra”. He is known mainly for his book Erech Lechem, glosses on the Shulchan Arukh, and also wrote the responsa Ohalei Yaakov; he most likely died in Cairo in 1610 or 1612.
