🔗The path to another sage

Core Concept

In his commentary he probes the Rambam’s words in depth and compares them with other Rishonim and with the commentators on the Rambam who preceded him, the Maggid Mishneh and the Kesef Mishneh. The Chida wrote that he began to write his work before he became aware of the commentary Kesef Mishneh, and that after he became aware of it he cited it in his own work as well.

Biography

A rabbi, halakhic authority and head of a yeshiva, a descendant of the exiles from Spain and one of the sages of Salonica in the 16th century, a disciple of the Maharashdam. He interpreted the Rambam’s Mishneh Torah in the Lechem Mishneh, which gained wide circulation and is printed in the standard edition of the book, and wrote a book of responsa called Lechem Rav. During an illness the name Chiyya was added to his own, and he sometimes signed with it.
